AUSTRAC Urges Inactive Digital Currency Exchanges to Withdraw Registrations
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has recently launched a campaign urging inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms to either utilize their registrations or risk having them canceled. This initiative, dubbed the “Use it or Lose it” campaign, also extends to crypto ATM providers, as announced by AUSTRAC.
Identification of Inactive DCEs
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, although not all of them are actively operating. AUSTRAC has expressed concerns regarding the number of inactive firms and their potential vulnerability to exploitation by criminals. As part of their efforts to mitigate risks within the sector, AUSTRAC will be reaching out to all DCEs that are no longer engaged in trading.
Brendan Thomas, the CEO of AUSTRAC, emphasized the importance of DCE firms maintaining updated details with the center, even if they have ceased offering services. Thomas highlighted the need to prevent the sector from being used for illicit activities by ensuring active registrations are in place.
Preventing Criminal Exploitation
Highlighting the risks associated with cryptocurrency, Thomas stated that criminals often exploit digital currency for money laundering, scams, and other fraudulent activities. By canceling registrations of inactive DCE businesses, AUSTRAC aims to strengthen the sector’s integrity and reduce vulnerabilities that could be exploited by criminals.
Furthermore, AUSTRAC plans to establish a publicly searchable DCE register to allow citizens to verify the legitimacy of service providers. This initiative aims to provide greater transparency and regulatory oversight within the cryptocurrency industry.
