Former Baylor University Athletics Staffer Faces Consequences for Online Betting Activities
A former Baylor University athletics staffer is facing significant consequences after it was discovered that he placed thousands of bets over a span of six years, some of which involved Baylor games.
Penalty for “Significant Conflict of Interest”
Sam Hancock, who previously served as the school’s director of resource development, has been issued a two-year show-cause penalty by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for a “significant conflict of interest” related to betting activities between July 2019 and September 2024.
During this time, Hancock placed around 2,950 bets totaling approximately $45,979 on three daily fantasy sports (DFS) platforms, including 113 wagers on Baylor games.
The NCAA’s report stated that “Hancock and the enforcement staff agree that from July 2019 through September 2024, Hancock violated the principles of honesty and sportsmanship when he knowingly participated in sports betting activities.”
No DFS Names Revealed
The NCAA did not disclose the names of the DFS platforms used by Hancock, nor did it provide details on the specific bets placed. However, it was mentioned that some bets involved athletes, indicating possible player prop-style wagers commonly found on certain DFS sites.
The issue of sports betting is particularly sensitive in Texas, where legislation on the matter remains stalled. While DFS operates in a legal gray area, it is widely accessible, with many operators promoting their services in states like Texas and California.
Two-Week Suspension and Gambling Counseling
As part of the show-cause order, Hancock is mandated to attend gambling counseling and cover his expenses for the NCAA’s Regional Rules Seminars. He is also required to serve a two-week suspension from his current role and is prohibited from any contact with college athletes or athletics staff during this period.
Currently holding a leadership position in the Wichita State University athletics department, Hancock must adhere to these conditions. His LinkedIn profile indicates that he has been serving as senior director of development and annual giving since November 2024.
Prior to his role at Wichita State University, Hancock held various positions at Baylor University for over five years, including director of resource development, associate director of resource development, and assistant director of ticket sales and annual giving. He also served as a College Ambassador for the Dallas Mavericks for five months starting in November 2017.
While Hancock’s actions did not constitute a major violation of NCAA rules, the sanctions imposed reflect the growing concerns surrounding betting activities by individuals within college programs, even if conducted through DFS platforms.
