Warner Bros. Discovery Pulls Out of $8.5 Billion Movie Studio Plan in Las Vegas
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has recently made the decision to abandon its ambitious $8.5 billion movie studio project in Las Vegas. The initial plan was to construct a state-of-the-art movie studio, contingent upon the passing of a film tax credit bill that ultimately did not come to fruition.
WBD’s $8.5 Billion Venture
Back in August 2024, WBD had unveiled its grand scheme to invest $8.5 billion in leasing and operating a movie studio in Nevada. However, this plan was heavily reliant on the approval of a film tax credit incentive bill that failed to materialize.
SB 496, the proposed bill, was rejected in June 2023, hindering efforts to diversify Southern Nevada’s economy by allocating additional resources towards the region’s workforce development. To address this setback, the bill has been reintroduced as SB 220.
Now known as the Nevada Film Infrastructure, Workforce Development, Education, and Economic Diversification Act, the revised bill aims to offer $100 million in annual transferable film tax credits over a period of 15 years.
Despite WBD’s optimism about the potential for growth in Nevada, the company ultimately decided to abandon its original plans. Consequently, Manhattan Beach Studios has been identified as the beneficiary of the new legislation.
Manhattan Beach Studios Takes Center Stage
Senator Roberta Lange emphasized Manhattan Beach Studios’ dedication to expanding Nevada’s film industry. In an interview with Casino.org, Lange highlighted Warner Bros.’ decision to reassess its strategy and location preferences.
Warner Bros. had initially committed to investing $900 million in studio construction and $8.5 billion in production expenses over a span of 17 years. However, Bircher Development, the intended studio developer, withdrew from the agreement earlier this year.
Following this development, WBD expressed readiness to engage with another developer to proceed with the studio’s construction. With the passage of SB 220, Manhattan Beach Studios is poised to undertake the studio’s development.
Sony’s Involvement in Nevada’s Film Industry
Aside from Warner Bros. and Manhattan Beach Studios, Sony has also expressed interest in Las Vegas’ movie scene. The entertainment giant is contemplating the establishment of a $1.8 billion studio in Nevada, leveraging tax credits as part of the incentive.
Supported by the Clark County Zoning Commission and in collaboration with Howard Hughes Corporation, Sony’s proposed studio is slated to receive up to $105 million in tax credits annually for 15 years. In exchange, Sony has committed to investing a minimum of $400 million in the state.
Under Assembly Bill 238, Sony would be required to film at least half of each production at the Nevada studio. Additionally, the agreement stipulates that Sony must complete each film within 18 months.
With multiple major players eyeing Nevada’s film industry, the landscape is poised for significant growth and development in the coming years.
